On Friday night, Tekkers made our way through the cold for the 18th The News Business Excellence Awards, held at the Portsmouth Guildhall. This year we were the finalist for two awards, The Medium Business of the Year Award and the Customer Service of the Year Award.

The evening was sponsored by Thethowans and was hosted by Nick Wallis, a character to say the least, with a few cringy dad jokes thrown in throughout the night. “I got mugged by 6 dwarfs last night. Not happy.” Cringe! Otherwise a great host and kept the crowd engaged all night. There were the usual opening speeches by the editor of The News, Mark Waldron and Lucy Gleisner, a partner at lead sponsor Trethowans.

The room was jam-packed with tables to accommodate the 500 guests, all decorated with what I can only describe as strange space-like lollipops. Our table was composed of three companies, Anne Gill Eyecare, and In2events, who were also up for the Medium Business of the Year Award. There was some friendly competition and banter with the proposal of the loser having to buy the table a round of drinks.

The awards began with Nick Wallis coming back onstage after dinner, to introduce the categories. A few awards went by and then it was our turn.

We were feeling a little defeated, but it didn’t dampen our moods. We still have one more award. To even be nominated for the award is an achievement in itself and to be 1 of 120 companies that were up for an award that night is just incredible.

Our spirits were still high for the Customer Service Award. It would be amazing for our team to be recognised for their hard work. We have always prided ourselves on our customer service and it would be such an honour if we won the award that proved it.

Ahhhhh. Literally, at that moment all I could remember is screaming and us all being in disbelief. We honestly couldn’t believe it, was it really happening. We walked on stage, still stunned, we joined Maureen Frost (Chief Executive of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce) who handed us the award. We then had our photos taken and a short interview with the Portsmouth News.

To finally win the Customer Service Award is just incredible, we just weren’t expecting to win the award whatsoever. Pete didn’t have a speech prepared, so would like somewhat of a redo.
